The United Nations India-Pakistan Ribbon is awarded to military personnel who served with the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
UNMOGIP was established in January 1949 to observe the cease-fire between India and Pakistan in the Jammu and Kashmir region. It remains a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
A related but different award is the UN India-Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM) medal, which covered service from September 22, 1965, through March 24, 1966. Canada, for example, lists eligibility for that mission as 90 consecutive days of service. The U.S. Army's policy is that a person awarded a United Nations Medal wears the first UN medal and ribbon for which they qualify; only one UN ribbon is worn at a time.
