Why does my new OCP patch look lighter? (3-Color vs. 7-Color)

If you have noticed that this patch is lighter than older OCP name tapes or ranks, that is intentional and by regulation.

In a recent effort to standardize insignia across the Army, Air Force, and Space Force, The Institute of Heraldry partnered with PEO-S to transition all branch insignia to a 3-color background pattern.

The Change: Ranks, badges, and name tapes have moved from the previous 7-color pattern to a lighter, high-contrast 3-color pattern.

The Reason: The old 7-color background often made rank hard to distinguish. This lighter modification improves readability and situational awareness, allowing for easier recognition of rank in day-to-day interactions without compromising the uniform's tactical functionality.
