The Army Combat Uniform is designed to improve access to pockets as well as increase comfort levels while wearing interceptor body armor. Its 50% cotton and 50% nylon ripstop fabric content makes the Army Combat Uniform world-wide deployable. Its pix-elated pattern of green-woodland, Grey-urban, and sand-brown desert allows for better concealment in any terrain.

Several changes have been made to improve functionality of the Army Combat Uniform: The bottom pockets on the jacket were removed and placed on the shoulder sleeves so Soldiers have access to them while wearing body armor, the pockets were tilted forward for easy accessibility, buttons were replaced with zippers that open from the top and bottom to provide comfort while wearing armor, and patches and tabs are affixed to the uniform with Velcro, allowing name tapes and patches to be removed from uniforms before laundering, and eliminating the cost of having them sewn on.
